When people define phlebotomy as simply a practice dealing with extracting blood from veins, this is a very incomplete definition. In fact, it merely scratches the surface of what the Phlebotomy profession really is. Hence, let us look at the deeper and perhaps more important aspects of Phlebotomy other than just dealing with blood work.

Understanding of the human body function as a whole

It is such a misconception that a phlebotomist must be knowledgeable solely on human veins and body functions relating to drawing blood. It has never been considered that a phlebotomist job is a one man team. For the phlebotomist to be able to deliver quality work, he needs the help of many others within the health care team. If you are an aspiring phlebotomist, it is also helpful to remember that you are not alone working at this kind of job. Phlebotomy profession�s success is also a product of proper coordination and communication with the rest of the people in the health team.

Precision and flexibility

Phlebotomy jobs call on its practitioners to be flexible yet extremely knowledgeable about their phlebotomy duties. The said conflicting characteristics described may be confusing but a phlebotomist must find out how to incorporate both because it is needed for the job. A phlebotomist must be skilled and knowledgeable to deliver the procedures exactly as it should be yet flexible enough to adapt to the different environment.

Agency guidelines and policy

Apart from all the characteristics listed above, a person into the career of phlebotomy must also be able to follow and practice according to agency policies. A good phlebotomist must know how to strike a balance of universal principles governing the place of their work. When this is followed, the practice of phlebotomists will be more adapted to the specific needs of that certain place.
